“Some
had pale skin with dark tattoos. Others had darker skin with
luminescent body markings. White eyes beamed toward us, empty,
emotionless. Most of them had slightly pointed ears. They were taller
and bigger than most people I knew. Some glided, others walked, and
all wore long black robes.” That’s
kind of cool. Ana tried to visualize those chained, and the tall
silhouettes gliding inside the cave. It made her shiver. “They
inspected everyone in the room and separated us into groups. We were
the lucky ones, they said, chosen to rule the Earth.” Jonas ran his
hand over the lower half of his face. “They spoke our language with
ease.” He leaned against the backrest of his chair again, as if he
wasn’t used to sitting, or he was uncomfortable. “It seemed the
ones with darker skin and luminescent tattoos were higher ranked. One
of them signaled, and more came in.” He glanced at Ana. “On some
floating carts, motionless human bodies were piled up, and we each
got one dropped at our feet—” “Where
they dead?” Ana interrupted. Jonas
shook his head. “No. They showed us how to feed. That was the first
time I drank human blood.” He
stopped again. Ghosts seemed to be haunting his eyes, as if trying to
escape. Ana
gathered her legs, curling them under her frame. She had dismissed
the earlier lesson from Mara in regard to the posture. “Who
were they?” Ana slightly leaned forward, devouring every word. Jonas
stared at her like her words woke him from a trance. “They
told us they were from Vamphora. Called themselves Vamphorians and
named us vampires.” “Wait.
Are you saying they were aliens?” Ana couldn’t believe her own
words. “Yes.”
Jonas nodded in agreement. “They were searching for a new home.
Theirs was on the brink of extinction.”

own demons in order to save each other, testing the powers of fate

For the first time that night, Theodor
deliberately investigated her mind. All of a sudden, the human he
thought weak, spineless, and afraid of everything, demanded an
answer. With his curiosity piqued, his right
eyebrow arched. She still thought he was a GeM, like her, even if he
denied it more than just once. Theodor took a few steps in silence,
and decided it was time for her first real test. Let’s see how
she’s going to react. He stopped
a couple of feet away from her. His gaze cut through her like a
laser. “I am Theodor De Croix, Prince of the Old Coven.” His chin
jotted up. “And I’m a vampire.” Vivienne took a step back. Her eyes
opened wide with a mix of fear and doubt. “Vampire . . . A monster . . .” she
whispered in visible disbelief. “Are you going to kill me?” “Of course not. Why would I do that?” Theodor followed all her thoughts. As
much as he detested invading anyone’s mind, this time he needed to
know. “Is it not what vampires do? I never
believed they even existed.” “It isn’t what we do. We have, in
fact, watched over humans for centuries.” Theodor took a step
closer to her. “In the old times, yes, my kind used to feed on
human blood, but not anymore.” His voice softened. “You’re
safe. I won’t hurt you.” She continued to retreat. Her fear hit
him in waves. “I’m sorry, but I don’t believe
you.” She panicked. Her pupils dilated, her
pulse accelerated, and her heartbeat became erratic. The attempt to
put some distance between them failed. Theodor hissed, displaying his long,
white fangs. Vivienne whirled on her heels. Her hair
danced around her shoulders, and a few strands covered part of her
face. Theodor cut off her way to the exit.
His hands grabbed her shoulders. Damn, she needs to eat more. “Viv, I will not hurt you. I would—” “You’re a blood-sucking monster,”
she yelled with tears running down her face, trying to free herself
from his firm hold. Her words shouldn’t have surprised or
hurt him. Humans called vampires all sorts of names. He knew since
the day he found out what he was how much humans feared and hated his
kind. So, why did her words hurt? Why did they feel like a slap to
his face? “Funny, coming from a GeM.” His confrontation didn’t stop her.
She continued to squirm in his hands, trying to break free. He wasn’t
going to let her go. “Look at me.” Theodor’s demand
froze her in place, and she stared at him. He drove deeper into her mind. For the
first time, she noticed his dark blue eyes, and for a fraction of a
second, to his satisfaction, she thought they were beautiful. “Please, let me go.” He couldn’t allow her to return to
where she escaped from, or on the streets. I didn’t save her
life to send her back to her death. Theodor needed more time and used his
magnetism on her. She fell unconscious in his arms without another
sound. “You failed, Viv.” He was the sole
witness to his own words.
Born and raised in Bucharest, Romania, Iuliana Foos currently lives with her husband in San Antonio, Texas.
When
she doesn't daydream or write, she enjoys drinking copious amounts of
coffee and playing online multi-player games, hoping one day to have
a white sanded beach as her backyard.
Becoming
a traditionally published author has been a life-long dream turned
reality.
Q.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself, such
as: your family, where you live, pets, favorite color, favorite film,
favorite book, and favorite scent.
A.
Born and raised in Bucharest, Romania, I emigrated to Canada when I
was twenty-nine and I lived in Montreal for seven months, then in
Toronto for fourteen years. Currently I live in the sunny San
Antonio, Texas with my husband.
My
all times favorite book, very few ever heard about, is ‘Letter from
an Unknown Woman’ by Stefan Zweig. It’s one of saddest books I’ve
ever read, still close to my heart.
When
it comes to a favorite movie, there’s a tie between ‘Star Wars’
(any of them) and ‘Dirty Dancing’.
I
have argued with many about my favorite color, white. Some say it’s
not a color but a shade. My favorite scent will always be the ocean.
Q.
What
inspired you to write your first book?
A.
As a teenager, I visited Dracula’s Castle. I was still inside the
medieval construction when the first idea sparked in my mind. Life
interfered, things happened and my dream to become a writer slipped
onto the back seat. It took over thirty years for the ‘Bloodline’
trilogy to come to life.
Q.
Tell
us a little about your current or upcoming release: your inspiration,
main characters, setting, etc. What was the most difficult process?
The easiest?
A.
Since the day the first idea sparked to life while walking the
narrow, dark, and dingy corridors in Dracula’s Castle, I shared my
mind with my characters. It was then when I first asked myself how
the world would be if vampires were real, living among us, humans. My
main character in Bloodline Origins, Ana, has a lot from myself. Just
as I always dreamed of being a vampire in a different world, in an
alternate reality, so does she. Only she actually goes for it.
Vampires had been written over and over again. But for me, there was
always this feeling that they wouldn’t all be bloodthirsty
monsters. I also never thought of them as being cursed, or undead.
So, I made them of alien descent since aliens are another fascination
of mine. What better way to combine the two? The story line was the
easy part for me. Writing it in a language that’s not my first, was
by far the challenging part.
Q.
Tell us about your process. Do you plot/make outlines for your WIPS,
or are you a total pantser?
A.
I think I’m a combination of the two, if you count outlining a
novel, or more, in my mind. For me it’s important to see the novel
rolling in my mind as a movie would. I need to see the scenes, hear
the dialog. I usually have a starting point and a destination. With a
general theme, I set at ‘seeing’ the novel first. To most it
looks like daydreaming, but it’s my process. Sometimes I’ll start
laughing for no reason just because of a snarky line in my head.
There had been cases where I’ve altered a whole plot, just to fit
in one line. So, a classic outline, written wouldn’t work for me. I
tired and felt constricted, obligated to follow a certain road. Until
I ripped the paper in a million pieces, and started to write. I guess
freedom inspires me.
Q.
What
are your current projects?
A.
With the ‘Bloodline’ trilogy done, I’m attempting a new series.
This time I kicked it up a notch and went aliens. ‘Star Class’
it’s a seven books series, at least for now, each of them taking
place on a different planet. I’m already seeing all these worlds
building in my mind. Each of the books will be a stand-alone. The
only thing keeping them in a series is a tiny little detail common to
all my main characters: a golden star tattoo.
Q.
What
is your favorite pastime, other than writing?
A.
When I don’t write, edit, or daydream, I play on line games or go
shopping. I used to play ‘World of Warcraft’, and currently I’m
into ‘Star Wars, the Old Republic’.
Q:
How would you describe your style of writing to someone who has never
read your work?
A:
I write sweet/clean romance, from multiple points of view. Even if I
keep a closed door when it comes to romance, there’s enough tension
to speed up your heart a little. I try to focus on the action, world
building and character development. Being born and raised in Romania,
I have views and in general an outlook on life a little different
than most. It’s what triggered the concept behind my first series,
Bloodline, where vampires are of alien descent. It’s a paranormal
romance, where vampires take center stage in a world where they are
quite different from what most would expect. Twists and turns will
take the reader in unexpected directions, all while some humor always
finds its way in. First book, Bloodline Origins, is already available
in both e-book and paperback. Second one, Bloodline Destinies, is
available on e-book, with paperback option soon. Bloodline
Revelations, the third and last in the series (at least for now),
should be out in August 2019.
Q:
What mindset or routine do you feel the need to set when preparing to
write (in general whether you are working on a project or just free
writing)?
A:
There isn’t much of a routine, but a mindset. When I write a first
draft, I live, breathe and walk in the world I’m creating. I need
to be there, in my character’s shoes, see what they see, feel what
they feel and act like they would. After I’m done and go in edit
mode, I fight with every word. English is my fourth language that I
learned, so it’ll always present a challenge for me. With Romanian
being first, at different times in my life I was also fluent (or
close to), in Spanish and French. Perfecting my English came with a
price, and I forgot the others, but kept my fluency in Romanian.
Q:
Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth
of each character all the way through to the page? Do you people
watch to help with development? Or, do you build upon your character
during the story creation?
A:
I always have my character developed in my mind before starting to
write their adventure. Sometimes their name will determine their
personality, other times I chose their name to match the specific
persona. I don’t plot much and I’m not the one to write pages of
an outline. As long as I have a general direction, a starting point
and an end, with my characters in place, I’m good to go. The
details, twists and surprises come to me while I’m writing.
Q:
Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character? If so,
which one(s)?
A:
Always! I tend to put a little piece of myself in each character I
write. In my debut novel, Bloodline Origins, Ana- the main character,
is a version of myself in many aspects. I even find that naughty part
of me in some of my villains, give them the freedom to act like I
would never do. I don’t believe in perfection, and that reflects in
my writing. My characters always make mistakes, learn from them, more
or less, depends on each case, and move on. I try to keep the nature
of each of them as real as possible, in an imaginary world. We all
need something to connect with, a common ground, and I believe it’s
our mistakes, and how we deal with them, that define us.
Q:
Do you have a character that you’ve been working on that you can’t
wait to put on paper?
A:
Yes, I do. With my Bloodline trilogy done, I’ve on a new project.
I’m planning on a seven-book series, ‘Star Class’. Each book
will take place in a different world, on various planets, and a
specific set of characters, so they can be read in any order. I
already finished the first draft for ‘The Agent’, first one and I
can’t wait to write the second. The main character will have a past
inspired from my grandmother’s life. She was my favorite person in
the whole entire world, so Maya in ‘The Pilot’ has a special
place in my heart.
Q:
Have you ever felt there was something inside of you that you
couldn’t control? If so, what? If no, what spurs you to reach for
the unexpected?
A:
I always found myself wondering about the infinity laying outside our
world. Since I was very young, I wished to explore those
possibilities. Unfortunately, technology didn’t take us yet far
enough into the journey of the Universe. The only option left, was
my imagination. It’s probably the reason I write fantasy,
paranormal, science-fiction, and everything that’s out of the
ordinary, different from the life we all know. Vampires, aliens,
shifters, dragons, and many other creatures, they all live in our
imagination, but what if they were real? What if there are worlds out
there where they live and perhaps watch over us?
