Adventures of Death, Reincarnation and Annihilation
by Francis H. Powell
Genre: Horror, Fantasy, Scifi Short Stories
What if the human race was considered irrelevant and then each being was just uploaded then locked away on hard drives called "brain pods" ?
What if a sub species was to come into fruition, then the human race turned on it, hunted it down before trying to annihilate it? Imagine you found out you were an ancient soul, who is reunited with another being from your former life?
Set in different times in a variety of settings and time periods, the past, the present and the future, the book explores the inevitable unknown that lies before us all "death". Death can arrive in a multitude of forms. Each part of the book explores different themes. There are characters who following their demises have to face up to their lurid pasts. There are some who face annihilation and others who are in a crazy pursuit of world destruction. We are living in an age in which it appears that the doomsday clock is ticking ever faster, as we teeter over the edge of world destruction. The book aims to contain some ironic twists. Even as young children we build up nightmare visions of what death involves. The reader is often left to distinguish between what is real and what is not, as stories reside within stories and the storytellers can never be fully trusted. Not all the book is doom and gloom, there are Elsa Grun's bizarre encounters with men and Shellys' hapless husband Arnie.
From secluded beach houses, to obscure motels, to visions of heaven, which takes the form of the Hotel Paradiso, to the world of the future death is always a wild adventure.
THE WORLD THERE AFTER
PART 1 THE EXODUS
It was while watching Zee Tube, the second president of the new Global Republic, make a chilling speech, to a carefully elected few, that Mobatroy and Rad Meterman decided to take action. Mobatroy had just become pregnant. “We will create a new existence, nothing like anything we have known before there will be no more human fallibility, no more physical pain, we have long surpassed, what those in the past called God, we will be the new deities living in perfection, we are following our destiny, we need purification and eliminate all that can damage us in any way, we must follow a process, a radical one, it is our brains that make us function, our bodies are just dispensable, mere receptacles for the brain, we must follow the path to the final evolution, the final brushstroke that completes a masterpiece” He had continued. “Humanity has run its course”. He said gleefully, “indeed only last week another zone had to be shut down.” He raised his voice, “We must head towards an exodus, we have no more place on this world.” His voice had no traces of emotion. The world was on its final journey towards being obsolete, humans with bodies were now an unnecessary inconvenience in President Tube’s eyes. The world had become unsustainable. A vast catastrophic event had seen a previously undetected “super volcano” erupt and now a dense cloak of ash shrouded the world. Large areas were bereft of sunlight, causing an eternal winter. Nothing grew now. All animals had died, in a short period of time. Famine and disease had spread and the world was now the most meagre of existences, threadbare and barren. A pregnancy within the Republic was not only rare, it was virtually outlawed. The few woman that had children these days had decisions to make. Some secretly sold their offspring to rich people for vast sums of money. Others saw their children being snatched away from them by the authorities, no doubt either used for scientific purposes or simply exterminated. Some had them snatched by child traffickers, it was big business, children being such a rare commodity. The republic scattered the propaganda liberally across the world their slogans. “Children = poverty” “Think of the world, not another mouth to feed” “Children spread disease” “A smaller population is a better population” It wasn’t just children who were being systematically weeded out, it was anyone who did not match up to the criteria of those in power. “Do you merit your existence” in vast letters was an often used slogan. In truth however the world had been slowly dying a lingering death caused by apathy. People had just fallen into submission or they simply knew no better. Those of a scientific mind or intellectual mind were safe, less they showed any signs of subversion. For those lacking in required intelligence, their survival chances were limited. They were shipped away in their hordes, to lands where there was no chance of any kind of nourishment or kind of sustainable existence. It was guaranteed, they would soon be killed along with the others who shared their predicament or fall victims to disease. Few parts of the world were functioning. Countries had long since ceased to exist. Indeed an entire continent had been used as a dumping ground. Some said if you flew over this land you would see vast white mountains, stacked high with skeletons, that if there was still sunlight, they would glisten like candy. It was said that in the past this land had been used for dumping prisoners, now it was for the diseased and for the dead. Not only was the constant smell of death, language had also died. People spoke the same global language “world sphere” this language omitted words that had prevailed before in the old languages. There was no word for “farmer” there were no words such as “compassion” “equality” “socialism” “maternal”. Most people only spoke prosaic sentences full of jargon, basic survival language. All books containing references to any of the religions had been long since destroyed and possession of such books resulted in instant death penalty. “In a word of near perfect technology, it is us who can define the afterlife” was a boast that was commonly circulated.
