Publication Date: May 6, 2019
Publisher: Entangled Teen

All her life, seventeen-year-old Chessie has had recurring dreams about a little white farmhouse. Quaint? Not quite. The house is the site of the unsolved murders of Villisca, Iowa, where eight people were slaughtered in 1912. With her parents on the verge of divorce, Chessie is stuck spending the summer with her grandparents in Villisca—right across the street from the axe murder house.

She’s soon hearing voices calling out for help and begins unraveling a link between herself and the town’s bloody history. And when she falls for a cute boy harboring a big secret, the pieces fall into place as she at last discovers the truth of Villisca's gruesome past…

***GUEST POST***
Interview with the Author

How did you come up with the title?
The title 8 Souls comes from the eight people who were killed in the Villisca, Iowa axe murders of 1912. They are the historical backstory to Chessie’s modern-day tale of paranormal troubles and cute boy woes.

What are your current projects?
I’m excited to announce that 8 Souls is being made into an audiobook, so be on the lookout for that! I also have a YA contemporary that's in the hands of my agent, Eva Scalzo, and I’m working on a couple of other manuscripts as well.

Do you see writing as a career?
Absolutely! I work during the week as a non-profit caseworker, but always refer to writing as a job, never a hobby. I spend several hours a week honing my craft—writing, editing, and working on marketing. It’s very much a career and my ultimate goal is to make it my only career.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Here is the first page of 8 Souls. And the entire first chapter will be up on my website soon. www.rachelrust.net

I have a secret.
It’s not about a crush, or an embarrassing moment, or anything exciting I did without permission. It’s not someone else’s secret that I’m keeping in confidence.
It’s my own secret. One that visits me every night.
There are two parts to this secret, and I’ll tell you both, even though you’ll think I’m crazy. Not that I’d blame you for that.
The first part is this: I’ve had the same recurring dream ever since I was little. We're talking every single night for as long as I can remember dreaming. Seriously, every night. Whenever I close my eyes, there it is.
The dream varies a little, but there’s always one same detail: the house.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
The only advice I’d tell other writers is to not give up. Beyond that, things are subjective, and advice is difficult because there are so many writing styles and publication choices. Writing and publishing is not a one-size-fits-all business.

Have you ever hated something you wrote?
Of course! I’d be lying if I said otherwise. The early drafts of my first attempt at a novel are especially painful to read. I didn’t understand much about story structure and just pantsed a bunch of character conversations and adventures, having no idea that didn’t amount to a plot. Eeek!

What is your favourite theme/genre to write about?
I love writing anything under the broad umbrella of mystery, be it paranormal, a thriller, or a romance. I’ve found it nearly impossible to write something that doesn’t have a plot twist or characters who aren’t as they seem. I never fully trust any of my characters, and neither should you.

What are your expectations for the book?
I did my best to write an entertaining, fictional tale while staying respectful to the tragedy of a small town. So I hope readers enjoy Chessie’s story as much as I do, and I hope 8 Souls helps bring some awareness to the eight lives lost back in 1912.
