In a war of gods and tyrants, the will of the dragonrider must never falter.
Captured and tortured by the brutal tyrant, Argonox, Reigh’s worst fears have now been realized. Argonox has successfully twisted his mysterious dark power for a truly evil purpose—reanimating the long-deceased legendary dragonrider, Beckah Derrick, and her monstrous king drake.
But Argonox’s cruelty won’t end there, and Reigh fears the worst is yet to come. Rescue is unlikely as the Tibrans prepare to make their final strike, poised to break Maldobar’s ranks of proud dragonriders once and for all. With many of its cities already captured by the Tibran Empire, all hope now rests with Jaevid, Princess Jenna, Phillip, and their mismatched band of dragonrider allies to lead the last stand and save their kingdom.
Even in such frightful times, Jaevid may find he still has a few old friends ready to take up their weapons and stand at his side again. But facing down Beckah is perhaps the one thing that might break Jaevid’s resolve. Can he really strike down the woman he used to love in order to save the kingdom?
One final battle will decide the fate of our heroes. Can the strength dragonrider prevail once again? Or will the Tibran Empire become Maldobar’s new legacy?
“Bravery is not an immunity to fear—it is rising up to meet it with the hope that nothing is impossible.” — Sile Derrick, FLEDGLING

Enemy fire from the ground howled past me in barely discernable blurs. Arrows glanced off my armor. Spears zoomed passed my head, missing by inches. A net snagged at the edge of one of Phevos’s wings, but he was able to shake it off and continue his rapid dive toward the ground. We’d trained for years on how to make an assault like this. It was our primary mission—to lay down fire and clear the way for ground infantry. Vexi, however, had never seen a single day of official training. She was still wild and didn’t know how to work with a rider in battle. So, the instant the young dragoness touched down, Phevos and I moved as one to hold the perimeter so that my father could dismount. It was safer for him to get as far away from her as possible. His life wasn’t the one she was interested in saving, after all. He unbuckled quickly and kicked free of the saddle, hitting the ground in a roll before springing up to run headlong toward Reigh with his sword drawn. Argonox saw him coming. He unfurled a long, ninetailed whip and drew it back to strike, snapping the tip off the rumps of the grounded dragons hauling his chariot. The beasts screeched in pain and bucked as Argonox pulled back on the reins, undoubtedly wrenching those pinch bits into their soft tongues. The dragons responded with a spew of burning venom aimed right for my father. Fire exploded into the night. I had to look away, shielding my eyes from the bloom of intense light. When I looked back, there were only flames. I couldn’t see anything—no sign of my father. “No!” I shrieked and whipped the saddle handles, giving the command to pursue. There was still time. I could make it! I would not let my father die this way! A figure unfurled from the flames. Two broad, birdlike wings spread wide, their feathers as bright and colorful as gemstones as they beat once. The flames instantly died out, snuffed by the rush of wind off those feathers. How was that possible? Nothing could douse dragon fire! I gaped, barely able to keep myself upright in the saddle as a creature rose from where it had wrapped itself protectively around my father. It had appeared out of nowhere, but now it stood like a riot of color amidst the churning darkness of battle. It was a bizarre mixture of bird and fox, with feathers as bright as a jungle parrot’s and eyes that glowed like fiery emeralds in the night. It was almost as big as a dragon, although far stranger than anything I’d seen before—outside of paintings and tapestries from the Gray War, anyway. I gasped. It was a foundling spirit. On slender birdlike feet, the creature crept around my father, its large pointed ears perked forward, and vulpine snout wrinkled in a snarl. Throwing off his helmet, my father stood and aimed a broad grin up toward Argonox. He was alive! And without so much as a singe mark anywhere that I could see. As Vexi sailed in from the sky, her sides swelling with the distinct deep breath that preceded a spray of fire, King Felix drew his sword. He rushed for the chariot, swinging wide with a furious shout I heard clearly over the roar of battle. “Give me back my son!”
