Summons
Fable Ranger Book 1

Genre: MG Fantasy, Fairy Tale Mashup

Take care what you wish for. You just might get it.

Twelve-year-old Casey doesn’t think life could get any more unfair. Plans for her special basketball tournament are tossed aside by her sister’s wedding plans. She even has to be a bridesmaid now, with all the lace and silk and—oh, the horror! All she wants is an escape, but she never imagined she’d be swept away to a world of Mother Goose rhymes, fairy tales, stories of Arabian Nights, and oh, by the way, all but one fairy godmother has been kidnapped.

Casey learns she’s been summoned as the Fable Ranger to lead the search and rescue of the missing wish-makers. But she’s not the hero they want. In the world of fairy tales, damsels aren’t meant to swoop in and save the day.

Now all Casey wants is to go home, but the veil between worlds is on lockdown. Taking fate into her own hands, she embarks on an airship flight to find the phoenix tears that can open her way home. Her journey would’ve gone as smooth as the perfect layup if it weren’t for that pesky bounty the evil Dovetail has placed on her head. But if Casey fails, the Arabian Nights will disappear forever—and leave her trapped in a world unraveling one fairy tale at a time.

Tagline: Take care of what you wish for. It just might come true.

Blurb: One fairy godmother-in-training remains after all the godmothers have been kidnapped by the evil Dovetail. Only one thing Fairy GIT can do: summon the Fable Ranger, protector of the book and land of Lorealia. With his strength and might, he can unite the heroes of legends and lore and bring the godmothers home.

Just one problem …

Instead of a grown man, twelve-year-old Casey - a girl - answers the call.

Casey didn’t want to be swept away to a strange new world, and certainly didn’t expect to be rejected as the Fable Ranger summoned simply because she was a child and a girl. Worse yet, the unbalance of good and bad magic closed off her only way back to the people she loves.

Trapped, Casey’s only dream is to go home, but there’s no special chant or wave of the wand to make it happen. Her wish will require work, sweat, and very special tears. Can she fulfill her wish when Dovetail will stop at nothing to complete his agenda of spiraling the land of Lorealia into the ruins of a happily never after?

A light tap on my shoulder pulled me from a dream where Charlie-boy, Robin and I teamed up for a full court basketball-royale against a team called the Doves. Our side should’ve scored two points on Robin’s layup. The board only recorded points made by the Doves. We were definitely getting screwed. “Five more minutes, please?” I mumbled, tugging the blanket above my head. Persistent, the person shook my shoulder, hard. I bolted upright. “Okay, okay, okay. I’m up!” Rubbing my knuckles into the corners of my eyes, I blinked once, then twice. Aside from the slivers of sunshine stealing through pinprick size holes in the leaf curtains over the window, I didn’t see a thing, until I turned my head. Face to face with a tanned girl. “I’m Little Bo peep and I’ve lost my sheep. Can you tell me where to find them?” With curly brown hair half-tucked under a wide brimmed hat, she wore a dress tied at the waist with a sash. Ruffled everything made her the mirror image of a pink and blue powder puff. I blinked my eyes again, hoping she’d disappear. Instead, she repeated herself, tapping her shepherd’s rook against the floor. Fairy GIT rushed in and took Little Bo peep by the shoulders. “Bo peep, I told you child, you must wait at Once Upon a Pond. Remember, the sheep will come to you when they need a drink and you’ll lead them to the meadow.” I watched them leave, hypnotized by Bo peep’s bouncing ruffles, until their footfalls faded down the stairs. I fell back in the cushiony blankets, yanking them over my head, heaving a sigh. Waking up to Bo peep asking me about her sheep rammed home the truth. My life had taken a really long walk off a short pier. Nothing to save me. Nothing to cling to. Nothing but thick mists where the ocean should have been. Where my normal life was supposed to be. From the moment I was forced to this…place, I’d held myself together in spite of … A messed up ankle. Shot at with a bow and arrow. Talked down to and accused of being a thief. Sore bottom from mule riding. Hunted by crazed doves. Hidden away like some criminal when I hadn’t done anything wrong. Just being me. A twelve-year-old girl. A tear slid down my cheek. I hadn’t cried through all that. Why now? The tears flowed, releasing a pent up sob held back for far too long. I pulled my legs up to my chest, wrapping my arms tight around them, bawling harder and harder in the dark comfort of the blankets.

Return
Fable Ranger Book 2

Casey is home! But not for long…

Casey’s short-lived return to the real world is followed by a rapid scramble back to Lorealia to tackle Dovetail and more of his mischief. This time, it’s a family affair — not just to save the missing godmothers, but to rescue her sister Leslie as well.
Snow White is now Snow Leslie, trapped in an off-script fairy tale that’s doomed to spiral into a never ever after with the rest of Lorealia if Casey, her father, and Charlie-boy fail their mission to stop a war.
And has the book finally realized it made a mistake in choosing Casey as the Fable Ranger after all? Why is it rejecting her?
Don’t miss this final installment of the exciting Fable Ranger duology.

And has the book finally realized it made a mistake in choosing Casey as the Fable Ranger after all? Why is it rejecting her?

Dad sighed and opened his mouth to speak, but a gravelly scream cut him off. It sounded like pain became flesh and blood and had no other way to express itself than to howl. And it came from downstairs. It didn’t sound anything like Leslie, so that left one person. Jesse. Mom, Dad, and I leaped from the bed and rushed out my bedroom door, racing down the stairs two by two. We jerked to a halt in the living room. Mom whimpered a high-pitched squeak as her knees buckled. Dad caught her in his arms before she could fall to the floor. My heart rammed within my ribcage in pounding protest, eyes not wanting to believe what was clear before me. There was Jesse, kneeling beside the couch. With trembling fingers, he rifled through the slowly dissipating rose petals covering the cushions. “She’s gone,” he croaked out between sobs. “Leslie, she was here. But these …” Several red rose petals sifted through his fingers then winked out of existence. “This isn’t possible,” Dad whispered beside me. “There’s only ever one Ranger summoned at a time.” I wondered if maybe Leslie should’ve been chosen in the first place. Maybe it shouldn’t have been me.

Reading and writing have been lifelong passions. It was around the time she gave birth to her forever-love, nicknamed Chipmunk, that she really took writing seriously. After all, how could she teach her child to follow her dreams if she hadn't tried herself?

As a YA fantasy/sci-fi reader and author, she favors the magical, mysterious, the darker side of life...even harbors a secret fright for things that go bump in the night.

Q. If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
A. Casey shows she can be a bit feisty – and a little bratty – at the start of Summons. However, as the story goes along, that feisty part of her gets tested. Making it to the end of the adventure takes a lot. I saw a movie, Skyscraper with The Rock, Dwayne Johnson. There was a girl in it that I think would fit the bill for Casey:

Q. If your book had a candle, what scent would it be?
A. No joke, there is something magical that is in the book. It has to do with the way certain things smell. I was so interested in this, that I had someone put together a scented oil and call it Casey. This was a while back and did it as a fun thing at the time. But I LOVED the citrusy scent of the oil. That is what the candle would smell like, like hints of fresh orange and lemon zested freshly before you.
There might also be one that smells like chocolate cake. You can find out why in both Summons and Return.

Q. Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
A. I am a definite booknerdigan. I recall being introduced to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe early on in elementary school. As I grew older, a lot of Judy Blume’s books caught my interest, like Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. I eventually discovered there was a whole Chronicles of Narnia so I gobbled those up in due time, as well as the Lord of the Rings series, and The Hobbit.
I devoured lots of romance novels (sneaking reads to a few Harlequin novels when I was still a preteen and didn’t really understand what all was happening lol!)

My tastes vary, but I’m mainly a fiction chick with a leaning to fantasy/science-fiction. With a little romance laced between the pages, I’m a happy camper.
